Vallarta Supermarkets, one of the largest Latino-owned supermarket chains in California, and The Gonzalez Family Foundation have helped make this back-to-school season a lot brighter for several employees and their dependents by awarding a total of $253,000 in scholarships for the ’22 – ’23 academic year.

All eligible full-time Vallarta Supermarkets employees and their dependents, part-time students, and graduate students were eligible to apply for the scholarships.

“Investing in the future educational success of our employees and their families is important to Vallarta. We believe education is key and are extremely proud and honored to be able to help our Vallarta family advance their academic goals,” said Lizette Gomez, Director of Marketing for Vallarta Supermarkets.

“These scholarships will help further the educational goals of our employees but also for future generations to come,” concluded Gomez.

Last year, the Hispanic grocery chain and The Gonzalez Family Foundation awarded $250,000 in scholarships to assist employees and their dependents with education expenses.

Over the past several years, the grocery store chain and the foundation have awarded hundreds of scholarships to financially support the academic growth of its employees and their dependents as part of the company’s commitment to the well-being of its workforce.

In another of its commitments to support minorities, Vallarta Supermarkets established the Vallarta Influencers and Partners (VIP) Program to help inspire Latina women to become independent individuals as future entrepreneurs and leaders. Last year, Vallarta integrated author and entrepreneur Ellen Marie Bennett, founder and CEO of Hedley & Bennett, the leading culinary workwear brand based in Los Angeles, into the VIP Program.

The Hispanic retail chain donated 200 copies of Bennett’s book “Dream First, Details Later: How to Quit Overthinking & Make It Happen!” to two Latino non-profit organizations to share her dynamic entrepreneurial spirit and personal drive with women who have or are considering starting their own business.

Vallarta Supermarkets is a family-owned business founded in 1985 by Enrique Gonzalez Sr., who was later joined by his four brothers, his son, and a nephew. The full-service independent grocery chain, based in Sylmar, California, has more than 8,000 team members and 53 locations throughout California (Ventura, Los Angeles, San Bernardino, Riverside, Kern, San Diego, Santa Barbara, Tulare, Orange, and Fresno counties).
