"Behind the Apron" is an original dance work about the mental health challenges faced by employees in the catering industry. It will be performed in Sofia on Sunday, November 7th at 2pm and 7pm

This performance is a collaboration of Jacob Gutierrez-Montoya, the creative director of the Sacramento Contemporary Dance Theater, and local restaurant owners Bobin and Patrick Malvani. Originally in early 2020, shortly before the pandemic began, it originated from the "I got your support" campaign, which was created by Mulvaneys to encourage restaurant employees to pay attention to signs of emotional distress from their peers. Due to long and uneven working hours, demanding customer requirements and unstable pay, it is well known that the hotel industry has many difficulties for employees. Their rates of alcoholism, drug abuse, self-harm, and suicide are higher than average.

The "Behind the Apron" performed by the Gutiérrez-Montoya Dance Company combines ballet and modern dance to comment on addiction, suicide and mental health in professional kitchens. "I swear that Patrick would cry every time he saw it," said Bobin Malvaney, who co-owns Mulvaney's B&L, a downtown restaurant, with her husband.
