According to recent reports, Chevrolet will provide a regular cab version of the popular Silverado with a short box in the 2022 model year. Although this configuration has been available in several global markets, it has been outside the United States for many years.

The Drive quoted a company spokesperson to confirm a report by the General Motors Administration that buyers of regular Silverado taxis will soon be required to choose between a standard bed and a long bed. "Standard" refers to the shorter of the two boxes; as shown above, this is an option for markets such as the Middle East and Latin America. However, although customers have a variety of trim levels to choose from, the short box is only available on the work truck (WT) variant in the United States. That is the cheapest and most basic Silverado, and it is configured as a rather rudimentary work truck.

Details such as prices and specifications have not yet been announced. We guess that the equipment list of the short-box truck will largely reflect the equipment list of the long-box model. If this is accurate, it will come standard with rear-wheel drive and a 4.3-liter EcoTec V6 engine rated at 285 horsepower and 305 pound-feet of torque. Four-wheel drive, a 2.7-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine and a 5.3-liter EcoTec V8 engine will appear in the list of additional cost options. Don’t look for wooden interiors, soft leather, and a host of technical features that rival luxury cars; the WT is equipped with 17-inch steel wheels, black bumpers, fabric interiors, manual windows (yes, these still exist!) and dual Speaker sound system.

Chevrolet is expected to make an official announcement in the next few weeks. The starting price for the WT short should be around $30,000.
